USB Flash Drives, also known as thumb drives, are portable memory storage devices. We are all familiar with these handy gadgets. Many students keep large quantities of important information on these devices. Several of these devices are turned into the Reference Desk every week. Our library users plug them into our public workstations and forget to take them with them when they leave.
A practical way for library personnel to determine to whom these forgotten flash drives belong is for the owner to create a small file on the drive that contains the owner's contact information. The owner's email address is sufficient. Library personnel can then open that file, retrieve the contact information, and contact the owner with information on where the USB Flash Drive may be retrieved.
