Our library donated the San Antonio Light photos to the San Antonio Express-News last year. We received the photos from the Light in 1988 but never had the resources needed to digitize and make the collection available to the public. The collection consisted of approximately 50,000 photographs, some of which dated back to 1909. There was also a card index that came with the collection that we donated to the Express-News as well. I believe it was a subject index only.

Most of the photos were marked on the back with the names of news services. The three major services were: International News Photo, International Newsreel and International Film Service. My understanding is that the Library Director had to get permission from the Hearst Corporation to make copies of these photos. I'm not sure if the news services listed above were all owned by Hearst during the time we had the collection.

Our contact at the San Antonio Express-News is Mike Knoop. He is the Director of News Research & Archives His email is His number is 210-250-3279.
